Finally, we’re down to the nitty gritty, and it’s a good thing. I mean, after hearing every conceivable rumor involving the panicky Knicks ownership, some nutjob coaching Florida international University and and whatever else you can think of, it’s all going to boil down to one thing:
How dumb the Knicks really are.
Will they be willing to part with four players (Danilo Galiinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler and Timofey Mozgov) and a draft pick for a guy they can sign in the off-season? Will they make a deal so bad that it effectively dynamites every last bit of hope and progress they have made since the summer?
To be precise, what exactly would be left to surround Anthony and Stoudemire if this deal is made? Chauncey Billups is still pretty tough, but he’s 34, and Landry Fields is a nice little role player but isn’t likely to get much better than that. Beyond those four you’ve got nothing but bit players, at best, and even worse you’d be capped out to the extent that you couldnt go after one of next years big free-agents, a list that includes Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Dwight Howard, among others.
Basically, you’d be scrapping a young, promising roster with flexibility and cap space for a team that would be locked into winning 45 games and not much more.
Sure, I hear the rumors of Isiah’s involvement just like everyone else does, but even he isn’t dumb enough to let the Nuggets play him like this when they have no leverage, right?
They can’t possibly be dumb enough to gut their team just when the future looks brighter than it has in over a decade, right?
And most importantly, there is no way even someone as clueless as trustfund baby James Dolan is really bringing Isiah back into the fold after the mess he made last time, right?
Well, what I do know is that all of these questions will be answered in 72 hours or less, and if you are a Knick fan, it’s gonna be a long three days.
Best of luck.
